University Hospital of North Norway: "The feedback has been exclusively positive"

The University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø has opted for annual leasing of the

ExAC Trainer. We asked clinical midwife specialist Marte Charlotte Hansen about their decision to acquire an ExAC Trainer and their experiences so far.

“Statistics show that 5% of all parturients suffer severe postpartum haemorrhage (>1000ml).  In addition, a study by by Camilla Mentzoni et al shows that the incidence of severe postpartum haemorrhage has increased significantly without a clear indication of causes. In Norway, new and interesting research has been focusing on exte

rnal aortic compression as a suplementary aid in the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage”, she explains.

This is the background for systematic training of health professionals at the hospital. “We believe that the training of skills using the ExAC Trainer will be an important step towards better treatment and reduction of incidences of postpartum haemorrhage as set out by national and international guidelines”.

Before training with the ExAC Trainer, all participants received teaching about external aortic compression with relevant theoretical foundations on the subject. In the training session, they could test out how to achieve the best possible compression- standing beside the hospital bed, or standing on their knees next to the Trainer. “The closer to reality, the better in clinical practice”, she says, referring to the importance of realistic simulation situations.

“After two out of five planned days of training with the ExAC Trainer, the feedback has been exclusively positive”, she concludes.

We congratulate the Unviersity Hospital of North Norway with the decision to reduce risks and cost-driving treatment related to postpartum haemorrhage. With systematic training of maternity care personnel, we expect that they shortly will experience effects of this simple but significant revision of their clinical procedures!
