"To save a mother does not only save a life, but also the future of her children."
ExAC was founded by Grethe Heitmann, an anesthesiologist currently employed at one of Norway largest hospitals. Driven by her passion understand and assist the 300,000 women who die each year during childbirth, she sought to make a difference. During her training inetric anesthesia, she visited hospitals in Malawi and Brazil, which further fueled her commitment. In 2019, she established ExAC with the goal of empowering healthcare workers in managing postpartum hemorrhage.
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a critical obstetric emergency and the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Early recognition and intervention is crucial to prevent complications and deaths from PPH.
The World Health Organization therefore suggests using manual aortic compression to temporarily reduce bleeding before and during definitive treatment. Still, this practice is not commonly implemented. ExAC has created the ExAC Trainer manikin, to teach the technique of external aortic compression. Additionally, ExAC develops medical-technical equipment to enhance the effectiveness of this procedure.
